Bromfiets museum Berkhout
Long ago, Cor Grotenhuis from Berkhout in North Holland was given a vintage moped. And with this generous gift, the Moped Museum was born. Now, years later, and after much blood, sweat and tears, the museum is a fantastic place for moped enthusiasts from all over the Netherlands and far beyond. German mopeds in particular are among the favorites of moped fanatic Grotenhuis. The Kreidlers, DKWs and Zundapps therefore take a prominent place in this museum that makes visitors long for the fifties and sixties, when boys tried to court girls on their chugging showpieces.
History and popularity
It all started for Grotenhuis in the mid-nineties, when, as mentioned, he was offered a vintage moped. And already four years later, in the summer of 2000, the moped museum was a fact. Grotenhuis restores the mopeds entirely himself. And he goes to work rigorously. The moped is taken apart down to the last bolt, cleaned and painted. Worn parts are replaced, which of course causes problems because the mopeds have not been in production for years.
Location
A visit to the Moped Museum in Berkhout can easily be combined with a moped tour through the West Frisian polder. Another possible excursion is a day trip to Alkmaar, which offers the visitor a multitude of beautiful buildings, canals, courtyards and other historical sights. The excise tower and the Waag are probably the best known. The Waag and the Waagplein have been the scene of the world-famous cheese market for years. Every year, more than a hundred thousand people see the cheese carriers at work. Nowadays, the cheese market takes place every Friday between April and September. The Waag also houses the Dutch Cheese Museum, which tells everything about dairy, dairy trade and life in the countryside in the region.
Program / activities
The Moped Museum does not have fixed opening hours. Anyone who goes by on spec and doesn't see the sign outside is out of luck. That's why it's advisable to call in advance for an appointment.
